You can find all the Try-It requirements here. I will show how we are planning to earn this badge.
1-We will review a map of New York State and a smaller one of the New York City/Long Island area. We will locate The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I will also turn this into a lesson about Ellis Island and we will probably read a book similar to If Your Name Was Changed At Ellis Island
, by Ellen Levine and Wayne Parmenter.2-We will write a story about how the phrase, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free", makes us feel. We will read the entire poem, "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus, which can be found here. the link also has more information about the author and the Statue of Liberty.
5-This is a great lesson about oxidation of copper. We will place a penny in salt water and leave it for a week. At the end of the week, we will note the changes and discuss that this is also why the Statue of Liberty is green in color.
6-We will make collages to show what "Freedom" means to us.
